This month, Nokia and Intel have established a new, collaboratively owned and run laboratory at the Centre for Internet Excellence at the University of Oulu. The initial focus of the lab will be graphics: making new, next-generation graphical experiences for mobile users. There's already a strong 3D internet research community established at the Centre, and the partners hope to tap into that excellence to help inspire their own projects. The Centre produced realXtend, an open source platform for interconnected 3D worlds, for example. The lab's first projects involve creating new user interfaces for MeeGo and potentially other platforms that use 3D graphics in ways that are new, easy-to-use and enjoyable. Read more....

Today Nokia has announced the Nokia 5250, a low cost (but not completely low-end) S60 5th Edition smartphone focused on music costing just 115 Euros. OK, there are some compromises like no microSD card bundled (and there's just 51 MB free storage onboard so you'll quickly want to buy one), no A-GPS, no WiFi and not even 3G, and the screen is just 2.8", but it's still a fully functional S60 5th Edition phone with Touch and the price of 115 Euros (and that's without subsidies and contract) will let S60 touchscreen phones target customer groups who so far couldn't afford buying a 5th Edition phone. Nokia says: The device comes with a music player on the home screen and tracks can be downloaded from Ovi Music or your own collection. There's 51MB of memory on board, but audiophiles can expand this to up to 16GB with a microSD memory card – enough space for 4000 songs. The device also offers an FM radio. Topping off its musical credentials, the 5250 comes with a free copy of the acclaimed Guitar Hero 5 Mobile: this is a phone that invites you to rock out while you're on the move. The Nokia 5250 will ship with the all-you-can-eat music offering, Ovi Music Unlimited, in selected territories. This is a highly sociable phone. Also on the home screen, you'll find your favourite contacts and there's easy access to Facebook, MySpace and the rest. You can also log-in to multiple email accounts such as Ovi Mail, Gmail and Yahoo! Mail, as well as instant messenger accounts from all the usual suspects. Extra applications can, of course, be added using the Ovi Store. Battery life is also excellent. The device will last up to 18 days in standby or up to seven hours talktime. If you stick to music, then it can play for 24 hours without stopping. On the back, there's a 2-megapixel camera, with Ovi Share installed to let you upload your snaps to the Web. Eminently pocketable, the device measures 104mm x 49mm x 14mm. Before taxes and operator subsidies, the Nokia 5250 will cost just €115 and is expected to ship in the fourth quarter. Technical specifications include: * ARM11 CPU @ 434 MHz * 128 MB DRAM * 51 MB on-board storage expandable to 16 GB with microSD card * 2.8" 24-bit 360x640 (nHD) touchscreen (resistive, single touch) * Symbian OS S60 5th Edition * 105 x 50 x 14.5 mm, 68.74 cc, 106.7 g * Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) * SCD, HSCSD, GPRS, EDGE data transmission * Accelerometer and proximity sensor * 1600x1200 (2.0 MPix) camera * VGA (640x480) video recording @ 30 fps * Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR (with A2DP and AVRCP) * BL-4U 1000 mAh battery, 2.0 mm charger * 19 days of standby, 7.7 hrs talk time, 24 hrs audio playback.
